Dr. Muhammad Sakhawat Hussain

Dr.  Muhammad Sakhawat Hussain was born in Barisal on 1 February 1948. He was commissioned in the Armed Forces in 1966, and continued his service till his retirement in 1995 from Bangladesh Army. While in the Army, he graduated from the Defense and Staff College, Bangladesh, Command and General Staff College, USA, and National Defense College, Pakistan. He obtained his Masters degree from Quaid-i-Azam University in Pakistan, MPhil at the National University of Bangladesh, and PhD from Bangladesh University of Professionals.

After his retirement, he engaged actively in civil society conversations and wrote extensively on matters related to governance, election and democracy.

He was appointed an Election Commissioner of Bangladesh in 2007 and completed a tenure of five years in this role. Local and national elections were conducted successfully under his leadership.

In addition to being a regular commentator on television and radio, both at home and abroad, he has authored over 30 books and over 300 articles. He is married to a child specialist and they have two sons.
